Admission and Entitlement for University Studies

To take up studying at a German university you need an entrance qualification and must have been admitted by the university in question. This implies that degrees acquired in your country of origin are accepted as equivalent to German qualifications.

Beforehand, you should of course find about the particular requirements of your chosen university. They will tell you whether you can apply at the university itself or have to turn to the Central Office for University Admission (Zentrale Vermittlungsstelle, ZVS). Universities in Schleswig-Holstein will rather point you to www.uni-assist.de an incorporated society in Berlin where you will have to submit your personal documents. ‘uni-assist’ then will check whether your entrance qualification is sufficient and tell the university about the outcome. It is, though, the university or university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) itself that ultimately will decide upon admission or refusal.

What you need for an application:

Completed application form (to be obtained with the university or ‘uni-assist’)

  • CV covering your school career
  • Certified copies of school diploma
  • If any, certified copies of university enrollment certificates
  • If any, certified copies of university achievements
  • Proof of knowledge of the German language
  • Copy of your passport or identity card.

All certificates and diploma must be submitted in German, translated by a sworn interpreter. Copies of translated documents must be certified as well.

A rather inexpensive way of having copies certified is going to your local town hall or sometimes to the office of your parish. You can have your documents certified by a notary too, but they are usually more expensive.

The Ministry of Education in Schleswig-Holstein can check your entrance qualification also. If accepted, it is valid for all universities and universities of applied sciences in Schleswig-Holstein.

Acceptance of your entrance qualification depends heavily on your country of origin because educational systems all over the world are quite different. An overview of the requirements for most countries worldwide can be found  www.anabin.de
